2014: I tried it in Taipei. My Couchsurfing host took me to one of the night markets for dinner, and I asked her to get me the infamous Taiwanese delicacy, the stinky tofu.
It looked like normal fried tofu cut into bite-size pieces, tasted just like tofu, but with an extra smell. Something like wet socks. But it wasn't bad enough to totally put me off. I don't know why they make it smell though, because I don't think it makes it taste any different.

Anyhow, I heard from my other Taiwanese friends that in certain parts of Taiwan, the stinky tofu stank more. So maybe those would taste different.
