Pad thai is a Thai-style stir-fried rice noodles. You can have it with egg, meat, seafood or vegetarian. It's served with side condiments such as peanuts, chili flakes, fish sauce, palm sugar, lime wedges and chives. It's the Thai equivalent of Malaysia's char kuey teow. Like char kuey teow, pad thai usually comes with a generous portion of beansprouts (which I always forget to tell the cook not to put). Unlike char kuey teow, the pad thai noodles are thinner and chewier, but usually there would be three or four different types of noodles you can choose from.
Apart from tom yum and green curry, pad thai is my go-to meal in Thailand. My favorite place to have it is on Khao San Road. In 2011, I could get it for as low as 20 baht per plate (without egg or meat). Nowadays, it's more like 30 to 50 baht, but it's still the cheapest, most wholesome street food you can get.
