Stay in an Overwater Bungalow

At our balcony
Overwater bungalows have become an iconic symbol of luxury tropical vacations. According to the internet, about two-thirds of the 6000+ overwater rooms in the world are in the Maldives, followed by Bora Bora.

But we also have our own, right here in Port Dickson, just 2-hour's drive from Kuala Lumpur. In 2016, I went there with my partner. Our room was RM800 per night.

Although Malaysia is just above Maldives in the alphabetical list of countries, our beaches aren't even close in standards. But because staying in an overwater villa in Maldives was simply out of the question, this was the best we could do.

The difference between our overwater villas and those in other tropical islands is that you're not allowed to swim beneath the villas. And who would want to anyway? Port Dickson is not a beach you'd travel across the world to visit.

As a consolation, they have a swimming pool. Two, actually. One exclusively for adults, and the other for families. They have a nice well-maintained garden, and also a pet farm that I didn't manage to see.

The resort is so fancy it even has a pillow menu. Do you like it soft or hard? I prefer hard.

This is how our room looked like. It had an open-air bathroom. (Pictures taken from Google, because in my excitement, I had forgotten to take pictures).

In the evening, we went to the bar, which had an outdoor seating, also over water. The wind was strong and it had started to drizzle, so we were the only people sitting outside. We braved it out anyway, just to watch the sun set. Best of all, it had free-flow wine and dessert.
